2012 HOTAIR on AUGUST 3,4 & 5
The 7th Edition of Hotair, Indonesia's premiere Kiteboarding competition saw I Komang Pande of Mertasari dominate, winning the Marathon and Wave, coming second in Hangtime and third in Freestyle.
Komang won the Simon Horn Memorial overall Cup presented by the late Simon's two sons Anthony and Thaisson, Simon was a Judge in the previous Hotair's.
This year's event was notable for the increased numbers of Balinese competitors,as tournament organizer Rodney Holt of Bali Sports Foundation observed
"this is good news for the Balinese kiteboarding fraternity as Kitesurfing will be an Olympic sport in 2016 in Rio di Janiero and a Balinese has a very good chance of representing Indonesia like Oka Sulaksana has done in the past with Wind Surfing"

6th HOTAIR RESULTS
Current Asian kiteboard Champion Thailand’s Yo –Narapichit Pudla showed all the other 20 international kiteboarders at the 6th HOTAIR why he is the best in Asia this year.Clearly in a class of his own Yo won all the individual events, culminating in winning the overall champion.
The Bali Sports Foundation (BSF) sponsored Kiteboard to KTA award for best overall Balinese kiteboarder went to I Made Budha (Lolo)In keeping with Bali Sports Foundation’s goal of giving local promising athletes opportunities they would never have, this award means that for the first time a Balinese kiteboarder will compete with Asia’s best in Thailand in the 2011-12 Kiteboard Asia Tour.
2011 HOTAIR ,Indonesia’s only kiteboard competition ,now in its 6th year, was held over 3 days from 15-17 July in front of Sanur Beach Hotel,on South Bali’s east coast. In further recognition of HOTAIR’s growing importance, this year the event is supported by Kiteboard Asia Tour,Asia’s professional kiteboard championship.
Race Director Mario Bari introduced a new event this year, the Wave contest held out on the waves of Sanur reef, together with tournament event regulars Marathon,Freestyle,Hangtime and HOTAIR’s unique Jump for the Chilli, with a cash prize.
HOTAIR started on Friday July 15th,with the 5 km Marathon course set by Mario, held inside the reef in Sanur , Yo outstretched his rivals to win comfortably from Balinese I Komang Pande with I Made Budha (Lolo) coming in third .
In the Freestyle, each competitor had 8 min heats in which to impress the 4 judges lead by head judge Marcel Sumba with their moves, points were given for difficulty, height, landing and overall fluidity.Once again Yo showed his class in finishing first.
The new event Wave was held on the reef next to the Sanur lighthouse and the presence of the Pertamina shipwreck, still stuck on the reef after 8 months, competitors were judged similarly to a surf contest in 20 minute heats. And again Yo came out on top.Special mention to Darma (Yogi) Watts with his surfing background grabbed a third place and this placing would later prove significant in the final standings as it allowed I Made Budha to edge out I Komang Pande for the BSF Kiteboard to KTA award.
To win Hangtime ,the competitors must stay in the air the longest ,and each jump in a 8 minute heat is added together for accumulative result.Showing his experience in the light winds,Yo out jumped everyone to win his 4th event
A further prize for longest individual hangtime is also awarded in this Yo again with a jump of 4.70 seconds.
On Sunday the final event was held, the jump for chilli, whereby a large chilli is tied to a penjor and the competitors have to jump and grab it.Winner takes all and for the first time over the weekend, the winner was not Yo but I Ketut Kecil, who by grabbing the chilli took home Rp 3 million.

BALI SPORTS and HOTAIR! 2010 soars to Success
This weekend Sanur was again host of the successful HOTAIR kite surfing comp and 2010 sees the competition reach it’s milestone 5th year. Founded in 2006 by Rodney Holt of Stiff Chilli and Bali Sports, HOTAIR has grown to be a firm fixture in the calendars of kite surfers across Indonesia and beyond, this year saw 14 competitors from Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and Holland participate in three different events over a weekend that was stuffed to the gills with thrills, spills and plenty of mayhem.
The competition has become the flagship event for the inaugural Bali Sports Charity Beach Games and with the beer chilled and music booming, at a little past 11am on July 2nd, the 14 kite surfing rivalsset out from Sanur beach for the first event. The marathon. The tough course tested the surfers’ strength and stamina, as well as their technical and tactical ability. The sight of 14 magnificent kites speeding across the ocean filled the horizon and set the tone for an exciting contest that left the growing mass of spectators enthralled. Eventually 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions were claimed by KadekPande, Suanda and Wayan respectively, but the story could have been so different, as KomangPande, brother of Kadek, looked destined to take the marathon title, stretching out a lead of well over 200m. Alas it was not to be, and any sibling rivalry was decided when Komang passed the wrong side of a race marker. As he came towards the beach, confident of his overwhelming victory, joy turned to dismay as the crowd and judges shouted out to him that he had to go back round the forgotten marker, some 500m away. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory Komang made his feelings clear, crying out in anguish and generally cursing all and sundry. I doubt this incident will be soon forgotten in the Pande household. However, Komang may well be able to console himself over the fact that at least he didn’t get his kite stuck on the nearby lighthouse, like one Putu‘Nelly’ Ekayasa. Not one to be embarrassed by the mishap, nor shy away from the spotlight, this was not the onlyPutu related drama of the weekend.
Still, one event down and two to go, the competition quickly moved to the next discipline. The freestyle. Here our competitors were given carte blanche to show off their skill and flair, their daring and panache, wowing the crowds with increasingly outrageous stunts and tricks, often defying gravity in the process. Again crowd favourite Putu was the centre of attention, managing to break his harness on one landing. With the clock still running he sprinted out of the sea as fast as his little legs would carry him, still attached to his kite for a quick switch around. The delay cost him dear and the ‘pocket rocket’ had to settle for 2nd place. 3rd was taken by Made ‘Lollo’ Buda. However, producing a mind boggling display of trickery, and partially slaying his demon from his marathon disaster, 1st was taken by KomangPande. Unlucky no longer it seems.
Making the most of the continuing strong winds we moved swiftly onto the final event of the weekend. The ‘hangtime’. Launching themselves into the air, our competitors had 8 minutes to jump for as long as possible, with prizes being awarded to the longest accumulative time in the air, and the longest individual jump. Brothers Pande again were given the opportunity to put one over the other and they took 3rd and 2nd place in the accumulative hangtime, with Komang beating his brother Kadek to 2nd place by less than a second. However, our man Putu metaphorically smashed their times of 52.5 and 53.49 seconds. With an astonishing accumulative time of 64.68 seconds Putu claimed not only the accumulative but also the individual hangtime with a leap of a staggering 5.78 seconds.
And so a dramatic conclusion to a fantastic day of kite surfing. HotAir veterans will note that the infamous ‘jump for cash’ round was missing from this year’s festivities. Fear not. Competitors will have a chance to grab ‘the chilli’ at the Sanur Sports festival in August, hopefully with the aid of the elusive wind that rendered the round impossible this weekend. Until then it just leaves me to thank the competitors, organisers, spectators and everyone associated with HOTAIR. We hope to see you all in 2011, if not before!
